Bogota (ANTARA) - Colombia’s Ministry of Trade stated on Friday (10/4) that it will raise import tariffs on Ecuador to 100 percent, from the previous 30 percent, as tensions between the two countries escalate.

Colombian Trade Minister Diana Morales said in a statement that Ecuador’s latest tariff increase from 50 percent to 100 percent forces Colombia to align its policy, while accusing Ecuador’s move in Quito of distorting competition and harming producers in both countries.

The process to implement the new measure will begin soon, Morales said, adding that Colombia has engaged in dialogue with Ecuador but received no positive response.

“We have deployed all diplomatic efforts and remain open to dialogue channels with the Ecuadorian government, seeking solutions that benefit both countries, businesses, and most importantly, communities on both sides of the border. However, we have not received a positive response. Therefore, we are forced to adjust our tariff measures to match Ecuador’s new tariffs,” she stated.

Morales added that the Colombian government will introduce support measures, including credit lines and financing access, to assist affected businesses.

Citing a trade deficit and accusing Colombia of failing to effectively combat drug trafficking at the shared border, Ecuador has raised tariffs against its neighbour in recent months, while Colombia denies the allegations.

The two countries are also at odds over comments by Colombian President Gustavo Petro that former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas is being held as a “political prisoner” and should be released.
