Cocoa: From Jembrana to the World
Cocoa has been present in Indonesia for several centuries and has now developed and spread widely. In 2013, the International Cocoa Organization placed Indonesia as the world’s third-largest cocoa producing country, with a production of around 460,000 tonnes for the global market. However, a number of challenges are faced, such as declining soil fertility and ageing plants. If these can be overcome, local production could be absorbed by the domestic industry. On the other hand, the government is also continuing to encourage downstream processing so that there is added value that benefits farmers.
