Cockfighting rampant in Muna
KENDARI, South Sulawesi: Cockfighting for money is rampant in
the regency of Muna, Southeast Sulawesi.
Reliable sources said that cockfighting had become a regular
business for certain groups of people in the regency, citing that
in the district of Parigi it had become a regular source of
entertainment and gambling.
The business has attracted not only locals, but also gamblers
from Raha, the capital of Muna regency.
Police officers sometimes witness the cockfighting.
"They can do nothing to stop it. The gamblers or the
organizers usually warmly welcome any policemen entering the
site," the source said, declining to explain how the gamblers and
organizers later treated the policemen.
"The amount of money circulating at the gambling site ranges
from Rp 500,000 to Rp 5 million."
Muna Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Alimuddin Tinulu acknowledged
that police had found it difficult to eliminate the gambling.
