Coastal Erosion in Monggalan, Klungkung, Worsens; Residents Hope for Sea Wall Construction
Coastal erosion at Monggalan Beach in Kusamba Village, Dawan Subdistrict, Klungkung, Bali, is worsening. Several residents persisting in the coastal area are gripped by anxiety while hoping the government will promptly intervene to build a sea wall.
“I am here out of necessity because of my trading. At night, I dare not sleep here. I take shelter at my parents’ house,” said a resident of Monggalan Beach, I Dewa Raka (68), when met by detikBali on Sunday (19/4/2026).
According to Raka, the area of coastline eroded by abrasion continues to expand, particularly during high tides. He pointed out his land and house that have already been submerged.
“My house used to be on that buoy. In two and a half years, much has been lost. If no sea wall is built, everything here could be gone,” Raka added, pointing to a row of houses along the beachfront that have not yet been affected by erosion.
Raka himself occupies one of the houses belonging to a resident who has already moved away. That house is located right on the beachfront that is continuously being eroded by abrasion. He uses the side yard of that house for trading. Raka also works as a porter transporting goods to be sent to Nusa Penida.
“When it’s already night, who would dare. Even during the day, I still feel anxious. If the tide comes, my trading goods could be swept away. It would be a loss,” said Raka.
Observations by detikBali revealed that the debris from the last house swept away by erosion is still scattered along the beachfront. As if waiting to be swallowed by the waves. About 20 metres from there, the beach waves can be seen continuously eroding the roots of a towering ketapang tree.
“Its leaves have all turned yellow. Some parts have already died,” said Raka.
Awaiting Realisation of House Renovation Promises
While worrying about the condition of the land where he earns his livelihood, Raka is also awaiting the house renovation assistance promised by the government. Raka has already prepared land for the housing construction assistance.
“I hope this year the house will be built,” he hoped.
Meanwhile, the Klungkung Regency Government has planned the relocation of residents affected by erosion. Deputy Regent of Klungkung Tjokorda Gde Surya Putra emphasised this during a meeting on relocation plans for erosion victims on 10 April.
“The situation at Monggalan Beach is already very severe due to erosion. We are taking swift steps to relocate residents to a safer and more comfortable place, so they can soon have decent housing,” said Surya.
Previously, the Head of Kusamba Village, Nengah Semadi Adnyana, stated that there are 12 households directly affected by erosion in Monggalan. Of that number, seven households do not have private land to receive house renovation assistance.
“These seven families will be prioritised to immediately occupy the Santhi Rahayu Row Houses in Sulang Village,” explained Semadi.
