Coal Stock at Cirebon Coal-Fired Power Plant Declines Since Last Year

Coal stock at the Cirebon Coal-Fired Power Plant is sufficient for up to ten days’ supply. The diminished coal stock has been felt by Cirebon Power since last year.

As is known, in early 2026 there was a coal shortage triggered by government policy that cut the production target from 790 million tonnes in 2025 to around 600 million tonnes this year. The move was taken to control global prices and prioritise domestic needs.

This situation affected coal availability and could also affect electricity supply. “However we do not expect that to happen,” said Deputy President Director of Cirebon Power, Joseph Pangalila, in Cirebon, West Java, on Thursday, 5 February 2026.

Joseph said Cirebon Power is among those feeling the reduced coal stock for about a year. He called on the government to prioritise increasing coal supply to the power plants. “We are awaiting steps by the government which is talking with suppliers to provide coal to the power plants,” Joseph said.

The coal stock held by Cirebon Power is for ten days for some portions and less than ten days for the rest. In normal conditions, Cirebon Power’s coal reserves would be more than twenty days. “Now it is slightly reduced. But overall, conditions at Cirebon remain safe, operations normal,” Joseph said.

Regarding the possibility of using other fuels, Joseph revealed that the Cirebon Coal-Fired Power Plant is designed to use coal as its primary fuel. In fact, the coal used is of a predetermined type, and replacing coal with a different type would not be possible. “Each coal has its own specifications, so each plant uses coal with different specifications,” Joseph said.

Joseph added that with the current stock, the plant owned by Cirebon Power will still supply electricity to PLN. “Power supply to PLN, especially ahead of Eid, is safe. The public need not worry. Eid al-Fitr is safe; usually ahead of Eid many factories shut down, so electricity supply also falls significantly,” Joseph said.

As known, Cirebon Power operates two PLTU units in Cirebon Regency. Each has a capacity of 660 MW and 1,000 MW. The two plant units have, to date, been able to operate well throughout 2025 and contributed to the national electricity supply.

“Throughout 2025, both plants owned by Cirebon Power operated well, improved plant reliability, and increased contributions to the national electricity supply,” Joseph said.
