Coal Sector Contributes 64 Percent of Aceh's Export Revenue

The coal commodity has proven to be the primary contributor to Aceh Province’s export revenue. The Aceh Regional Office of Customs and Excise recorded that the coal sector contributed Rp 6.98 trillion in export revenue, accounting for a dominant 64 percent of the region’s total export earnings. According to data compiled by the Aceh Customs Office, the movement in export volume and value for coal from the Aceh region has been highly significant. Based on customs data for the accumulated period of the first five months of 2026 (January to May), coal export volumes from Aceh reached a five-year high of 5.38 million tonnes, with an export value of Rp 3.11 trillion. This figure demonstrates growth and a sustained rebound trend compared to the same period in 2025, which saw 5.26 million tonnes valued at Rp 2.86 trillion, and a drastic recovery from the low point in 2024 of 3.24 million tonnes worth Rp 2.03 trillion. Despite the record volume in 2026, customs records show that the highest export value in the last five years was achieved in 2022, when 3.74 million tonnes generated Rp 3.31 trillion. This phenomenon is attributed to the exceptionally high global coal reference price during that period. Head of the Aceh Customs Office, M Rizki Baidillah, stated his office’s full commitment to periodically providing transparent information to the public regarding export and import developments. He explained that the export performance data offers factual field insights, showing that shipment volumes continue a recovery trend and set new records, reflecting the operational capability and resilience of Aceh’s mining sector amidst global market price dynamics. Analysis of customs data indicates that export volume movements are also influenced by the activities of business players. Coal exports have been consistently dominated by two main entities, PT Mifa Bersaudara and PT Bara Energi Lestari, although the 2026 period saw new dynamics with the entry of PT Media Djaya Bersama. Observing the record volume and fluctuating export values, this customs data is expected to serve as an objective reference for all stakeholders, enabling joint evaluation of real mining conditions and the formulation of strategic trade measures and value-added development for Aceh’s coal in the future.
