Coal-Fired Power Plants Still Reign Supreme in Indonesia, Here's the Proof
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has detailed that Coal-Fired Power Plants remain the backbone of the national electricity system. This is evident from the share of coal use which still dominates the national electricity supply. Acting Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tri Winarno, stated that the realised energy mix for generation in 2025 shows coal’s share reached 66.71%. This figure is much higher than the set target of 62.60%. For 2025, the realisation of national electricity production reached around 494 terawatt hours with a coal share of 66.7%. This turned out to be higher than the 62% target. Meanwhile, gas-fired generation only reached 14.31%, lower than the target of 20.50%. Renewable energy realisation reached 16.31%, slightly exceeding the target of 15.90%, whilst fuel oil usage was recorded at 2.67%. The dominance of coal is also continuing into 2026. Up to April 2026, coal’s share in the national power generation mix reached 64.87%, higher than the target of 62.94%. Natural gas utilisation reached 13.86%, still below the 20.35% target. On the other hand, renewable energy recorded a positive performance with a realisation of 17.89%, exceeding the 16.46% target. Fuel oil usage was recorded at 3.38%. Tri noted this renewable energy share is quite encouraging and shows positive performance.
