Coal Downstreaming Projects Expected to Begin Next Year, Says Deputy Minister
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM is optimistic that coal downstreaming projects will begin to materialise next year. This confidence was expressed by Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Todotua Pasaribu.
Todotua revealed that coal downstreaming projects are no longer at the conceptual stage but have already entered the commercialisation preparation phase.
"So, perhaps we can see within the next year that there will be realisation of downstreaming in the coal commodity sector. The nearest one will be coal to synthetic natural gas," he said during a CNBC Indonesia programme, quoted on Monday (14/7/2025).
Todotua expressed hope that through this downstreaming programme, Indonesia would be able to boost domestic production of ammonia and methanol. Both petrochemical products currently still depend on imports.
"First is ammonia, and second is methanol. These two petrochemical products, according to our records, still have quite significant import figures. And these two products are derived from gas extraction," he said.
