Coach criticizes Vietnam's VFF

HANOI (AFP): One month after dismissing the national team's Austrian coach Alfred Riedl, Vietnam's state soccer bosses on Friday faced a tirade from the country's Olympic coach, German, Rainer Willfeld.

In an interview with the mass circulation youth daily Thanh Nien, Willfeld accused the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) of failing to understand what it took to develop the game in a country where interest far exceeds ability.

"All responsible people ... and especially members of the VFF need to understand clearly the work of long-term football- building and need to participate in this work," he said.

Willfeld, whose under-23 Olympic squad is to represent Vietnam in the Asian qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup, called for a thorough overhaul of the state federation so that responsibilities were clearly defined.
