CNG as LPG Alternative Enters Final Testing Phase, Says Bahlil

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia has revealed that the development of a 3-kilogram (kg) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinder as an alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has entered the final stage of testing. Bahlil had just received a presentation on the progress of the 3-kg CNG cylinder. Currently, the testing process is still being carried out by the Oil and Gas Testing Centre (Lemigas) before the product can be used. “I was presented with the results for the 3-kilogram cylinder and its valve just three days ago. Lemigas is now conducting the final test,” he said when met at the Ministry of ESDM, quoted on Thursday (6/8/2026). According to him, based on the report received, only one testing stage remains, namely the fire test or testing the cylinder’s resistance to extreme conditions. The test is conducted with heat exposure of up to around 850 degrees Celsius. “But according to the information I received from their results, only the fire test remains. Because it is tested by firing with combustion at 850 degrees of heat. And only the fire test is left,” he said. Meanwhile, when asked whether the fire test was conducted in Indonesia or China, Bahlil said testing was carried out in both countries. “Just pray for it, okay? Pray for the best for our beloved Motherland,” he said.
