SINGAPORE (JP): The Asian Aerospace '96 show is scheduled to
open here today with some 70 aircraft from around the world on
display, including the Indonesian-made CN-235 turboprop.

Managing director of Asian Aerospace Pte. Ltd., Jimmy Lau,
said yesterday that more than 900 aviation-related companies from
36 countries are taking part in the air show.

The biennial show is being held at the Changi International
Exhibition and Convention Center from today until Feb. 11.

Lau said the exhibitors have rented 22,000 square meters of
indoor space and nearly 50,000 square meters of outdoor space.

Indonesia's aircraft manufacturer PT Industri Pesawat Terbang
Nusantara (IPTN) has one indoor exhibition booth, two two-story
chalets and an outdoor space for its CN-235 maritime patrol
plane. Its newest N-250 aircraft, however, was not brought along.

In addition to Indonesia's CN-235 turboprop, the Philippines'
SF-600 Canguro and China's K-8 jet trainer are the only other
Asian aircraft in the show.

Air displays yesterday featured the K-8 jet trainer, Lockheed
Martin's F-16D, a Mirage 2000-C fighter and the British Royal Air
Force's Red Arrow team. Shows are scheduled every day until the
end of the show.

The show also features 19 of the world's newest fixed wing
planes and helicopters. They include the Boeing 777-200, Cessna
Citation X and Dassault Falcon 900EX as well as a number of
military aircraft like the Dassault Rafale, McDonnel Douglas
C-17-A Globemaster, Bell 407, 430 helicopters and the Sikorsky S-
76 MK II helicopter.

Running concurrently with Asian Aerospace '96 is the third
Asia Pacific Defense Conference, which will be held today and
tomorrow.

Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie is
scheduled to speak on the second day of the conference about the
application of an advanced technology policy to achieve national
security and economic development.

The air show will also play host to the third annual Flight
International Aerospace Industry Awards for outstanding
achievements in the aerospace and aviation industries.

After Singapore's Asian Aerospace '96, Indonesia and China
will host similar air shows in July and November, respectively.
