Cloudy Weather to Dominate Most of Indonesia on Sunday
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts that cloudy to heavily cloudy weather will dominate most parts of Indonesia on Sunday. BMKG forecaster Bintari stated that cloudy and heavily cloudy conditions are expected in Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Serang, DKI Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. “Meanwhile, on Kalimantan Island, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, and Samarinda are forecast to be blanketed by clouds,” Bintari said in a weather broadcast followed from Jakarta on Sunday.
In the eastern region, cloudy and heavily cloudy weather is likely to occur in Mataram, Kupang, Gorontalo, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, and Merauke. Meanwhile, partly cloudy conditions are expected in Semarang, Denpasar, Makassar, and Manado. Light rain is forecast for Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, and Ambon. In several other areas, smoke or haze as well as misty conditions are expected in Padang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, and Banjarmasin, Kendari, and Nabire.
The BMKG also reminded the public to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain in the Riau Islands, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. According to the BMKG, these weather conditions are influenced by atmospheric dynamics, including the presence of tropical cyclone seedling 97W monitored in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Papua. The seedling, with a minimum pressure of 1,006 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 15 knots, is moving westward and still has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 to 72 hours.
Although the chance of it becoming a tropical cyclone is low, the system is inducing the formation of convergence and confluence areas in several Indonesian waters and their surroundings, thereby increasing the potential for rain cloud growth, especially around low-pressure areas and along wind meeting and slowing zones. The BMKG urges the public to continue monitoring the latest weather information and to be aware of the potential for sudden weather changes.
