Clongop Road Landslide Again, Gunungkidul–Klaten Access Hampered
Another landslide struck the new Clongop road in Gedangsari, Gunungkidul, with the landslide material partially blocking the Wedi-Gedangsari section, allowing only two-wheeled traffic to pass.
‘Yes, there was a subsequent landslide on the new Clongop road. The incident occurred last night,’ said Purwono, the Head of Implementation of the Gunungkidul Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), when reached by detikJogja on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
Purwono added that the landslide occurred at the site of the earlier landslide on Tuesday, 3 March. The debris on the road consisted of rock and soil.
‘So they had just finished clearing it when another landslide happened. But, praise be, there were no casualties nor injuries in the latest landslide,’ he said.
Furthermore, authorities have conducted assessments and cleared the landslide debris. In addition, authorities also cut trees that are prone to collapse.
‘Currently, the Wedi-Gedangsari road can be traversed by motorcycles. But for cars, the alternative routes Jalan Jelok and Jalan Sampang remain in use,’ he added.
Earlier reports said heavy rain since yesterday caused the talus mound on the new Clongop road in Plasan, Watugajah, Gedangsari to collapse last night. As a result, the Gunungkidul-Klaten connecting route via Wedi-Gedangsari was fully closed due to landslide debris.
Head of Disaster Emergency and Logistics at BPBD Gunungkidul, Edy Winarta, said the landslide occurred last night, Tuesday, around 21:00 local time. Regarding casualties, Edy reported none.
‘There were no casualties, but a 30-metre-long, 15-metre-high talus collapsed and debris blocked the new Clongop road,’ he told reporters on Wednesday, 4 March.
Moreover, Edy stated that about 80% of the road connecting Wedi, Klaten, Central Java with Gedangsari, Gunungkidul could not be passed. Given the current weather, BPBD Gunungkidul is wary of further landslides.
‘Therefore, the main connecting road between Wedi, Klaten and Gedangsari, Gunungkidul is temporarily closed entirely,’ he said.
