Climate Change and Urbanisation Pose Challenges for Indonesia's Architecture Industry
Jakarta – LIXIL, a sanitation and sustainable housing company, has reaffirmed its consistency and commitment to advancing Indonesia’s architecture and design industry. This is reflected in the execution of the LIXIL Architectural Design Competition (LADC) 2026.
Since its debut in 2019, LADC has established itself as a prestigious platform for Indonesian architects. With judging quality that is internationally objective, LADC 2026 again reinforces its legitimacy through the involvement of a panel of jurors of prestige across countries. Figures such as Andra Matin (Founder, AndraMatin Studio), Gregorius Supie (Founder, Yolodi+Maria Architects), and Richard Wood (Managing Partner Asia, Snøhetta) are key personalities who define the industry’s direction today.
In line with the global jury profile, LADC 2026 offers exclusive recognition ready to elevate portfolios and experience. The winners will receive a Studio Exchange opportunity at the international firm Snøhetta to learn directly from world-class architectural practice, and participate in the LIXIL Architectural Trip to Nagoya, Japan, an immersive journey to absorb design inspiration and broaden horizons. Additionally, the event promises broad publication exposure through various LIXIL communication channels and media partners as recognition of design excellence.
LIXIL’s initiative responds to contemporary design needs that emphasise inclusivity and sustainability. LADC is not merely a competition focused on the final outcome; the programme serves as a platform to widen dialogue space and open access to ideation exploration. Moreover, LADC aims to set new standards, encouraging how architects think, design, and realise living spaces that are better.
“Indonesia is an archipelagic country with thousands of identities. From small islands to large cities, natural and cultural wealth, varying infrastructure, to specific challenges such as climate change or urbanisation pressures. We believe that from this diversity of contexts come ideas most relevant for the future. LADC does not seek designs that are merely beautiful, but ideas that can become conversations and solutions,” said Arfindi Batubara, Marketing Director of LIXIL Water Technology Indonesia.
LADC 2026 adopts the theme “ARCHIPELAGO DIALOGUES: Architecture as a Space of Co-Creation”. The narrative stems from Indonesia’s character as an archipelagic nation rich in nature, culture, perspectives and ideas; a sequence of identities that are diverse yet interconnected. Through this topic, LADC 2026 invites professionals and young domestic creators to explore architecture as a sustainable process formed by diverse elements and collaborative ideas.
