The United States has accepted Poland’s proposal to station a US military base permanently on its territory. This decision represents Warsaw’s biggest diplomatic and security victory in recent years, whilst simultaneously sending a firm signal to Russia on NATO’s eastern flank.

The announcement was made by Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz via social media platform X. He stated that he had received an official response from US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, confirming Washington’s acceptance of Poland’s proposal to establish a permanent American military presence in the country.

‘I thank you for the positive response to our proposal and for opening the process for the permanent stationing of US troops in Poland,’ wrote Kosiniak-Kamysz, as reported by Euronews on Thursday (19/6/2026).

For Poland, this decision is not merely about additional troops. It is the result of years of diplomatic efforts and security lobbying. Since tensions between Russia and the West escalated, Warsaw has repeatedly pushed for the United States to station its forces permanently on Polish territory as a long-term security guarantee.

Currently, around 10,000 US soldiers are in Poland. However, the majority are deployed through a rotational mechanism, meaning their presence depends on Pentagon operational decisions and can change at any time. It was precisely this uncertainty that had previously sparked significant concern in Warsaw.

Some time ago, the Pentagon announced the suspension of the rotation of some American troops in Poland. According to circulating reports, approximately 5,000 soldiers temporarily ceased regular rotation and the next troop deployment was postponed indefinitely. The decision immediately raised anxiety in Poland, which has long viewed the US military presence as one of the main pillars of its defence against potential threats from the east. Criticism even emerged from a number of Republican politicians in the United States.

However, the crisis did not last long. The White House subsequently decided to send an additional approximately 5,000 troops to Poland. The move was reportedly linked to the excellent relationship between US President Donald Trump and Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Now, with the path opened towards a permanent base, the defence relationship between the two countries enters a new chapter.
