Clear old cars from the streets
Clear old cars from the streets
From Neraca
Traffic congestion in Jakarta is getting worse. The increasing number of private cars, the lack of driver discipline and the fact that street vendors tend to occupy the roadsides all hinder traffic flow.
As the number of vehicles increases, the Jakarta Administration must now determine the age of the vehicles that are allowed to operate on the road. For example, only private cars made after 1980 would be allowed to operate, while those before would no longer be eligible. A higher tax could also be imposed on older cars to pay for road operation and maintenance.
Controlling the number of private cars on the road will reduce traffic. Of course the owners of old cars will be hard hit but we have to consider the interests of the general public over individual comfort.
