Clear Facial Photo of Acid Attack Perpetrator Against Andrie Yunus Confirmed as AI-Generated

Jakarta, Kompas.com – Police have confirmed that a clear facial photograph of the perpetrator who threw acid on activist Andrie Yunus, which has been circulating on social media, is definitively an artificial intelligence (AI) fabrication.

Authorities assess that the image has the potential to mislead and obstruct the investigation process.

This information was conveyed by police officials who are handling the acid attack case involving the Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).

“With the circulation of crime scene footage, the perpetrators have actually begun to appear panicked and are attempting to obscure the investigative process by spreading AI-fabricated images or sketches,” said Iman during a press conference on Monday (16 March 2026).

Meanwhile, Roby Saputra, Head of Criminal Investigation at Central Jakarta Metro Police, confirmed that the image circulating on social media has undergone processing using artificial intelligence technology.

“It is AI (Artificial Intelligence). We are troubled by this photo editing because it distracts from the actual characteristics of the perpetrator,” Roby stated.

According to him, the use of AI risks obscuring the genuine details of the perpetrator that should serve as crucial leads in the investigation.

Furthermore, the clenched fist shape at the waist area was also judged to be unnatural.

Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations at Metro Jaya Regional Police, stressed that the AI-fabricated photograph cannot be used as a reference.

“We also emphasise that this circulating AI-generated photograph constitutes misinformation and therefore cannot be held accountable,” he said.

Nevertheless, police have not prioritised tracking down those responsible for spreading the image. The primary focus remains on identifying the acid attack perpetrator.
