Cleanup of Debris from Labour Day Protest Begins in Front of DPR Building
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The area in front of the DPR/MPR RI building began to be cleaned after the labour masses dispersed following the International Labour Day (May Day) commemoration on Friday (1/5/2026). Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the location at 6:00 PM WIB, the main gate area of the DPR appeared filled with rubbish and graffiti remnants from the action. Along the asphalt and pavements, various types of waste were visible, ranging from plastic beverage packaging and paper to scattered remnants of protest props. Several large banners were still seen attached to the iron fence, including those containing demands for the repeal of the Job Creation Law to protection for informal workers. At other points, smoke was still visible from the remnants of burning tyres or other objects carried out by the masses before they fully dispersed. They moved quickly to sweep and collect the rubbish into large prepared plastic bags. The cleaning efforts were also assisted by police officers still on guard at the location. They helped lift large rubbish and move road barriers to restore normal traffic access. While wiping sweat, he recounted the conditions faced by his team that afternoon. “We’ve been on standby since noon, but we could only enter fully around 6 PM after the masses had completely dispersed,” said Adi while pointing to the asphalt still filled with plastic rubbish. According to him, the biggest challenge was not only the plastic rubbish but also the remnants of burning that still emitted smoke at several points. “Graffiti like this is usually not cleaned by us with brooms; there will be a special team later or it has to be repainted because it’s hard to remove,” he explained. Adi added that the involvement of the police greatly assisted the cleaning process in the field. “The police also helped move concrete barriers and lift large rubbish, so it was handled more quickly,” he said.
