Clean Water in Tiban, Batam, Appears Turbid and Muddy
Residents in several areas of Tiban, Batam, have complained about the condition of the clean water flowing into their homes, which has been found to be turbid and mixed with sediment. This water quality disruption has reportedly hindered daily activities, ranging from bathing and laundry to cooking.
Responding to these complaints, the Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) provided an official explanation. The turbid water condition is confirmed to be temporary, resulting from technical impacts of infrastructure maintenance on the pipe network in the area.
The Deputy for Public Services at BP Batam, Ariastuty Sirait, explained that this brownish water phenomenon is an impact of restarting the distribution network following the completion of interconnection work on the Ladi transmission pipe, which has a capacity of 50 litres per second (lps).
“This phenomenon is a temporary impact that can occur after work on the distribution network. Sediment within the pipes is pushed by the water flow when the system returns to normal operation,” Ariastuty stated on Wednesday (3/6).
This interconnection work is part of BP Batam’s strategic steps to strengthen the reliability of the clean water supply for Batam residents in the future.
To address this issue, the clean water service provider (ABHi) has implemented accelerated measures to restore water quality through flushing methods.
BP Batam has expressed its apologies for the inconvenience experienced by Tiban residents. The authority emphasised that all technical teams are working at maximum capacity to ensure that clean water distribution returns to normal as quickly as possible.
Members of the public who continue to experience water quality disruptions after performing self-flushing are advised to report immediately through official customer service channels so that field officers can take prompt action.
