Clean government

Clean government

From Media Indonesia

The three poll contestants for the general election have so
far not touched on the theme of clean government. We have seen
significant progress in the 30 years of the Soeharto
administration, but still development is lagging far behind in
comparison to new industrial countries like Taiwan, Singapore,
Korea and Malaysia.

Certainly one explanation for this is our huge population, but
we shouldn't forget that Indonesia has far more abundant natural
resources. The basic difference between Indonesia and those other
countries is their courage to politically implement a clean
government.

Inducting a transparent implementation of law, clean from
collusion and corruption, should be the cornerstone of long-term
development. By administering this development, President
Soeharto would feel comforted to pass on the baton to the next
generation.

Wouldn't one of the election contestants be interested in
supporting Soeharto who is, as we know, getting older? In that
way, Indonesia would remember him as the eliminator of the
Indonesian Communist Party, the initiator of the New Order, and
moreover as the man who installed a clean government by the end
of the 20th century. All requirements would then be complete for
him to leave the throne and give the reign of the state to the
next generation. He will certainly need help, mainly from the
biggest election contestant, to implement a clean government.

If this promise is introduced as a campaign theme, and honored
after the election, all people would be reconciled, even if the
contestant became the single majority. There would be no need for
discussions on democracy, success of development, etc. All those
matters would become secondary if clean government and
transparent law enforcement were the focus of our development.
Please offer the people this basic promise, so that the
Indonesian government can attain higher integrity.

People will certainly elect a contestant who is willing to
offer these things.
