Jakarta (ANTARA) – Anthropic has updated the system instructions for its AI model, Claude, to prohibit users from creating copies of existing commercial video games.

According to a report by Engadget on Sunday (1 November), local time, the strict policy is intended to prevent potential infringements of game developers’ intellectual property and copyright.

The update was first spotted by a user on X and was confirmed by Anthropic technical staff member Addy Osmani. He explained that the new rules are designed to stop Claude from replicating specific games, even if their names have been changed.

The restrictions come amid a rise in decompiling and recreating released games using AI technology. Popular titles including Halo: Combat Evolved, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto V have reportedly been remade by independent developers using AI, with versions playable directly in web browsers.

The new policy also comes against the backdrop of intellectual-property lawsuits involving Anthropic. The company previously agreed to a $1.5 billion (Rp27 trillion) settlement over a lawsuit brought by hundreds of thousands of authors concerning the use of copyrighted material to train its AI models.

In addition, the organisation managing the estate rights of legendary singer Elvis Presley recently filed a similar lawsuit against Anthropic, alleging copyright infringement.
