Classes for the gifted

PADANG, West Sumatra: The provincial office of the Ministry of Education is preparing to introduce special classes for gifted children.

Ismet Syarif, head of the office, said here yesterday the administration needs to make a breakthrough -- in this case, the introduction of classes for the gifted -- in its educational policies.

Only through such an approach can the challenges and needs for better human resource in the future be met, he was quoted by Antara as saying.

Of the 4.3 million people that make up West Sumatra's population, gifted people make up approximately 2 percent, he said.

"All parties should help develop better human resources by supporting the establishment of these special classes in all of our schools," Ismet said.

He did not give details as to when the classes would be introduced. (swe)
