Clarification of news article
CARE International Indonesia would like to clarify several issues concerning the article: Uncaring project boss imprisoned, The Jakarta Post, June 5.
First, the article implied that Mursalim Kasari was a CARE employee, which he is not and never has been. He was an official of the provincial government of Southeast Sulawesi.
Second, the article states that a Canadian aid group disbursed Rp 63 million and that CARE funded a Rp 144 million clean water and sanitation project. This is incorrect. The funding mentioned in the article was solely from the Indonesian government.
Since 1979, CARE has worked with the provincial government of Southeast Sulawesi on community development projects, providing technical assistance and funding for materials. Our funding and financial reporting, however, are kept separate from those of the Indonesian government.
Last, the article incorrectly states that Mursalim went to Surabaya in February 1996. The correct date is February 1995; he was project officer only during the 1995 fiscal year.
