Clarification of incident: 13-year-old cyclist beaten by ride-hailing driver after bicycle run over in cycling lane
A 13-year-old cyclist named Ucup was beaten by a ride-hailing driver whilst attempting to prevent a motorcycle from entering a dedicated cycling lane in the Sudirman area of South Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026.
The incident occurred whilst Ucup and several friends were cycling towards Bundaran HI. When passing through the cycling lane at Dukuh Atas before a downhill stretch, Ucup stopped to block access to the lane using a cone placed in the middle of the lane alongside his bicycle. He intended to prevent motorcycle riders from using the dedicated cycling path.
“Suddenly a man came through my lane and I blocked him. There was a discussion, then he turned around and changed lanes,” Ucup explained when contacted by Kompas.com on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
After that incident, one of Ucup’s friends came to assist him in preventing another motorcycle rider from entering the cycling lane. However, the situation escalated when another ride-hailing driver came through the lane, running over Ucup’s bicycle.
“Initially, my friend and I wanted to leave, but suddenly there was this man with a black helmet wearing a ride-hailing jacket who sped through and hit my bicycle all the way to the side of the lane,” Ucup said.
Ucup’s black bicycle was damaged after being run over by a Yamaha Fazzio motorcycle belonging to the ride-hailing driver. The incident angered Ucup, who struck the driver’s helmet.
“Perhaps because he couldn’t get through, he got upset, and maybe because I confronted him by slapping his helmet,” he explained.
“I was very angry because my beloved bicycle was just run over by a ride-hailing brother like that,” Ucup stated.
As a result of the incident, Ucup suffered injuries to his face, particularly around his mouth. “My left mouth area is swollen and the inside is like torn because it hit my teeth when he punched me,” he said.
The injuries were initially treated with warm water compresses, and Ucup indicated his condition has improved significantly. However, he has not yet reported the incident to police pending permission from his family.
