Civilian Killed by Gunshot in Bokondini Clashes
A resident from Mairini Village, Bokondini District, Tolikara Regency, Papua Pegunungan, was killed by a gunshot following a clash in Bokondini District on Tuesday, 14 April 2026. Staff from the Indonesian Evangelical Church Council (GIDI), Eneko Bahabol, stated that based on gathered information, the resident named Elky Wunungga was shot dead at the scene. “The shooting is suspected to have been carried out by officers from the Bokondini Sector Police,” Eneko said via WhatsApp message on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. Prior to the shooting incident, he explained, a clash had occurred among villagers in Bokondini who were conducting a traditional funeral procession. The clash escalated when villagers from both sides exchanged stone-throwing actions. Shortly afterwards, members of the Bokondini Sector Police arrived at the scene. However, without engaging in dialogue, the police dispersed the crowd by immediately firing rifles towards the gathering. “There was no persuasive effort. They arrived and shot directly, resulting in the victim falling,” Eneko stated. This Papua Church Council staff added that the situation in Bokondini District is still tense. Residents from several villages are on guard and have closed access to the settlement area. “The church urges the community and the police to exercise restraint so that the situation does not worsen,” Eneko said. Tempo has sent a confirmation request message to the Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police, Commissioner General Cahyo Sukarnito. However, until this report was published, the message sent via the WhatsApp messaging application only showed a double grey tick notification, indicating it had only been sent.
