Civil Society Coalition Sues President Over Indonesia–US Trade Agreement at Jakarta Administrative Court
A coalition of civil society organisations has filed a lawsuit against the President of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the Reciprocal Trade Agreement (ART) between Indonesia and the United States at the Jakarta Administrative Court (PTUN).
The lawsuit alleging unlawful governmental action was formally filed on Wednesday, 11 March 2026. In the legal action, the coalition is requesting the PTUN Jakarta bench to:
First, in provisional proceedings, grant the coalition’s petition for provisional relief in full and suspend implementation of the ART signed on 19 February 2026 until a final court judgment is rendered.
Second, in the substantive proceedings, grant the lawsuit in full and declare that the President’s action in approving and/or ratifying the ART constitutes unlawful conduct by a government official.
Third, order the defendant to pay all costs arising from the case.
The coalition consists of the Centre for Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS), Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ), Perempuan Solidaritas Association, WALHI National, and Trend Asia. The coalition contends that the ART agreement threatens national sovereignty.
The lawsuit targets the action taken by the Indonesian President on 19 February 2026, when he signed the Reciprocal Trade Agreement between Indonesia and the United States without obtaining parliamentary approval and without meaningful public participation.
