JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The government has officially extended the work from home (WFH) policy for civil servants every Friday for the next two months. The government cited global economic uncertainty due to ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East as the reason for the decision. “Where the war has not ended, WFH will continue for the next two months,” said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 21 May 2026. This move extends the one-day-a-week WFH system which was previously tested and implemented since early April. The policy is seen as a response to soaring global crude oil prices triggered by Middle East conflicts. The strategy is viewed as the government’s quick adaptation to an uncertain global situation. On the other hand, this momentum is also being used to drive a transition towards a more efficient work culture by maximising digital technology. “Overall, this policy is part of a structural transformation towards a more efficient, productive, and resilient economy,” Hartarto said during a virtual press conference on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
