The government has officially implemented a work-from-home policy for civil servants (ASN) every Friday. However, several public service sectors are excluded from this work-from-home policy. Some services that must continue to operate fully from offices include emergency sectors, readiness, public tranquillity, and general order. “Then cleanliness and waste management, population affairs, licensing, health, education, regional revenue, and other public services,” explained Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian during a virtual press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026). In addition to several public service sectors, a number of echelon I and II officials in regions, sub-district heads, village heads, and public service sectors are excluded from the work-from-home policy. At the provincial level, high-ranking and mid-level leadership officials are still required to work from the office despite the work-from-home policy for ASN. “So this includes leaders at the provincial level, for example, high-ranking echelon one mid-level positions, then echelon two primary,” said Tito. They must still be present directly at the office to ensure that government coordination and public services are not disrupted. In addition to structural officials, several public service units are also not included in the every-Friday work-from-home policy. “The implementation of work-from-home for ASN in central and regional agencies is carried out for one working day per week, namely every Friday,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto during a virtual press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026). He stated that the four-day workweek policy has previously been implemented in several ministries/agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Public services continue to run and productive activities including banking, capital markets, and others continue to operate. Those at the offices are permitted to arrange it with certain applications,” said Airlangga. This policy is made as part of cost-saving efforts in response to the high world oil prices due to the war in the Middle East region.
