Civil Servants to WFH Every Friday, DPR Member: Don't Let It Be Seen as Extended Holiday
JAKARTA - A member of Commission II of the DPR, Ujang Bey, has warned that the work from home (WFH) policy for civil servants should not be misused as an opportunity for extended holidays.
“Indeed, yesterday there were some concerns from colleagues in Commission II, that the weekend WFH policy should not be seen as an extended holiday, and used as a chance to holiday with family or hang out with friends,” Ujang told Kompas.com on Wednesday (1/4/2026).
This NasDem Party politician stated that the government needs to anticipate the concerns of the DPR members.
If there are civil servants who violate it, said Ujang, the government must impose firm and measured sanctions.
Nevertheless, Ujang believes the government has thoroughly studied and calculated the policy before implementing WFH on Fridays.
Because, regardless, the fuel saving policy must be carried out as soon as possible by the government, given that the end of the Iran vs Israel-US war is unknown.
“While the policy is running, the government certainly needs to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of the policy going forward as material for evaluation, whether the policy can be changed in timing or added to. It all depends on how effective the policy impacts fuel savings,” he said.
“The implementation of WFH for civil servants in central and regional agencies, one working day per week, namely every Friday,” said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto in a virtual press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
Airlangga explained that Friday was chosen because work activities on that day are not like Monday to Thursday.
He stated that the four-day workweek policy had also been implemented in several ministries/agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Airlangga also emphasised that public services will continue to run despite the WFH policy every Friday.
“Public services will continue to operate and productive activities including banking, capital markets, and others will continue to run. Those in the offices are permitted to arrange with certain applications,” he said.
