City to pull permits of taxis found to be cheating public

JAKARTA (JP): The City Land Traffic Control Agency will revoke the operation permits of taxis found not using meters or using doctored ones.

The head of the agency, JP Sepang said on Friday night that the permits of all taxis violating the regulation will be revoked.

"The new policy is effective as of today. We've tired warning them. Now things will be fair," he said on Friday.

Most taxi companies blame the drivers for such things, claiming that the management is not aware of any irregularities," Sepang said.

This is illogical, as the management is there to supervise the drivers and the condition of their taxis. The management cannot simply blame others, he said.

Sepang said that more than 500 cabs were impounded by his office during a prolonged operation which started soon after the Idul Fitri holidays.

He said the operation was conducted in response to public complaints.

He said the public has long complained that many of the taxis' meters are not working as they should, and that they have to pay more than usual, while some taxis are willing to work only with the meter turned off.

Meanwhile, the City Office of Transportation Ministry plans to increase the number of airport shuttle busses to overcome transportation problems from the Soekarno-Hatta airport to the city.

The head of the office, Abdul Karim, said over the weekend that the number of the airport buses from the state-owned bus company Damri will be increased.

"It is the only way to solve the transportation problems in the short term," he said.

There is no information on how many Damri buses will be plying the airport route.

Karim said that the airport taxis were an embarrassment, and could have a negative impact on Indonesia's reputation. Many foreigners have been complaining about this matter.

The city land transportation control agency complains that it cannot nab taxis in the airport area, because it's out of its jurisdiction. (yns)
