City steps up supervision of 20 public establishments

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is stepping up the supervision of 20 public establishments throughout Jakarta, an official says.

The head of the city public order office, Kuseini Budiantoro, said yesterday that the establishments are prone to infractions such as drug trafficking.

"My office is increasing the supervision because there is strong indication that the places are being used for drug transactions and such other crimes," he said.

He added that most of the establishments are located in West and Central Jakarta, such as Jl. Gajah Mada, Mangga Besar and Glodok areas.

Kuseini refused to name the establishments but said four that were previously warned for breaching the law are among them.

The four are Terminal One, Zodiac, Atlanta and Top 10.

The city administration warned the four establishments earlier this month after the police cracked down on them and seized illegal substances.

The police reported that 250 Ecstasy pills and 94 other pills of different colors were seized during the crackdown.

Kuseini said this does not necessarily mean that his office will slacken its supervision of other public establishments which are not included on the office's blacklist.

He said since early this week his office has intensified supervision of all public establishments and has raided establishments which violated city regulations.

The office closed down video game establishments in the Duta Merlin building, Central Jakarta on Wednesday. A total of 178 machines were sealed during the operation, he said.

Kuseini said that on Tuesday it also closed down two kiosks which were used as video game centers at a shopping center managed by city-owned PD Pasar Jaya on Jl. Perniagaan, West Jakarta and confiscated 19 machines.

Kuseini said his office also deployed officials in a police crackdown on Tuesday on gambling centers in the same building in which 350 people were allegedly found gambling that night.(yns)
