City residents in guessing game on representatives
City residents in guessing game on representatives
JAKARTA (JP): While waiting for the final results of the
current vote count, most Jakartans are still guessing who will
represent them in the House of Representatives.
As with many other cities, the preliminary computerized vote
tally released by the General Elections Commission (KPU) shows
that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
has garnered the most votes.
PDI Perjuangan's lead is followed by four other big parties --
the United Development Party (PPP), the National Mandate Party
(PAN), the Golkar Party and the Justice Party (PK).
Of the votes counted as of Wednesday afternoon out of the
total 5,072,249 registered voters in the capital, PDI Perjuangan
had collected 1,008,970 votes for the House, followed by PPP with
447,383 votes, PAN with 416,191 votes, Golkar with 268,633 votes
and PK collected 123,417 votes.
The KPU has allocated 18 seats in the House to Jakarta,
determined by the city's population.
The minimum vote requirement to win a seat in the capital is
expected to be about 280,000. The figure is reached by dividing
the total number of valid votes cast by the number of seats
allocated to the city.
The exact figure will not be known until all votes are
counted.
Except for PDI Perjuangan, all of the big five parties
nominated their chairpersons to represent Jakarta.
In an open dialog between the National Elections Committee and
KPU aired on Tuesday evening by Indosiar television station, KPU
representative Djuhad Mahja said that if a legislator elected to
the House was then appointed a Cabinet minister, he or she would
be removed from the House and replaced by the next candidate on
the party's list.
But the chairman of the provincial committee's program
division, Muchammad Taufik, said separately on Tuesday that each
party would be responsible for deciding who was to fill any
vacant seats.
"The main thing is that the person is included on the list of
permanent House member candidates," he told The Jakarta Post.
