City police join narcotics meeting

JAKARTA (JP): Head of the Narcotic Division of the City Police Crime Investigation Directorate, Lt. Col. Djoko Satrio, has been assigned to represent Indonesia at a two-week conference on drug related crimes, to be held next month in Phuket, Thailand.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko said yesterday that the March 13-24 meeting is being sponsored by the U.S. Drugs Enforcement Agency's Singapore office.

To be held at the Holiday Inn hotel in Phuket, the meeting is expected to be participated in by senior police officers from around this region, including Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

The meeting, entitled Investigation of Drug Crimes and Related Offense, is mainly designed to create better cooperation among those countries in an effort to intensify the fight against drugs.

In May, Jakarta will host this year's ASEAN Police (ASEANAPOL) meeting of all police chiefs in Southeast Asian countries. (bsr)
