City does not plan to recruit staff

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will not recruit new employees for several years because of the 36,800 new staff it has received as a result of regional autonomy.

Governor Sutiyoso made the statement during a ceremony to welcome 34,545 new city employees who were transferred from seven of the city's ministry and state minister offices. The ceremony was held near the National Monument on Thursday.

The new employees came from the Jakarta offices of the ministries of national education, health and social welfare, industry and trade, manpower and transmigration, agriculture, transportation and telecommunications, and the office of the state minister of forestry. The majority of the new employees formerly worked for the Ministry of National Education.

The city also took in 2,301 employees from the now defunct ministries of information and social affairs last year.

With around 72,000 employees, the city is now overstaffed, Sutiyoso said. (jun)
