City detains newcomers

JAKARTA (JP): Some 230 people were caught early Wednesday morning for failing to show their identification cards.

"Most of the netted people were found in boarding houses before they left for work," Hasdir Irvan, a source at the Central Jakarta Administration told The Jakarta Post.

The people had no identification and no source of income in the sub-districts of Paseban, Rawasari and Galur in Central Jakarta.

Two thirds of them were women who were food vendors.

"If they have a source of income, they will be helped to get a legal ID card," Hasdir said.

Those without a regular source of income will be returned to their hometowns by the government.

Earlier, a provincial decree was issued to curb the influx of illegal migrants to the capital. The administration's roundup is one method of stopping unskilled and jobless people from remaining in the city. (14)
