City Council to be dissolved?
From Republika
The Jakarta City Council is threatened with dissolution after the capital's military commander, Bibit Waluyo, issued letter No. R/511-5/II/2002 dated July 3, in which he replaced the council's chairman, Edy Waluyo, with Doni Sudarno. To avoid having to disband, the council must elect a new chairman.
The election of a new council chairman is important because the council will soon be involved in the election of a governor and vice governor of Jakarta for 2002-2007 term. The council will lose its credibility if the position of chairman remains vacant for too long, especially considering that various members of the community frequently come to the council to voice their aspirations.
Of course, the process of electing a new council chairman cannot be completed overnight. However, in view of the urgency of this matter, it is very likely that the bureaucratic red tape can be cut to ensure that the election of the new Jakarta governor and deputy governor can take place as scheduled.
