Citroën has announced that it will bring back the legendary 2CV in an electric version after 36 years of discontinued production. According to reports, the electric 2CV is scheduled to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.

The original 2CV was produced from 1949 to 1990, with over five million units sold worldwide. The car became widely recognised for its simple design, lightweight body, and affordable pricing. Citroën’s parent company, Stellantis, intends to leverage the 2CV’s popularity to attract consumers seeking inexpensive electric vehicles in the European market.

Citroën plans to set an initial price of around 15,000 euros (approximately Rp308 million) for the base variant. If realised, the 2CV will become one of the cheapest passenger electric cars in Europe.

In terms of design, Citroën will maintain the classic retro silhouette of the original 2CV, but will utilise a modern electric platform and drivetrain. The car is designed with a compact footprint for urban use and is expected to be smaller than the Citroën ë-C3.

Production of the electric 2CV will take place in Italy and is scheduled to commence in 2028. The factory will also produce the latest generation of the Fiat Panda, which will use a similar low-cost vehicle architecture. Citroën stated that the development of the electric 2CV remains focused on the core concepts of the original model: lightweight design, a practical cabin, multi-functional utility for daily use, and an instantly recognisable appearance.

The return of the 2CV follows a trend among several European automakers reviving classic models in electric versions, such as the Renault 4, Renault 5, and Twingo.
