Citizenship Renunciation Fee Soars, Law Minister Provides Explanation

Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas has explained that the adjustment of citizenship service tariffs is intended to improve service quality, support digital transformation, and align with current economic conditions. This step is outlined in the latest regulation aimed at strengthening legal certainty for the public. In a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday (25/7), Supratman mentioned that the new tariff determination considered various strategic aspects, ranging from investment in information technology to changes in the ministry’s nomenclature. He stressed that digital transformation is the main key to providing easier services. “More importantly, the government continues to improve service quality so that the public obtains legal certainty, a transparent process, and increasingly easy services through the digital transformation we are undertaking,” Supratman said. Based on Government Regulation (PP) Number 30 of 2026, there is a significant adjustment to Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) tariffs within the Ministry of Law. The naturalisation fee to become an Indonesian citizen (WNI) for foreign nationals is now set at Rp75 million. Meanwhile, citizens applying to renounce their Indonesian citizenship voluntarily are charged a fee of Rp5 million per application. Supratman asserted that this tariff remains competitive compared to policies in various other countries. The regulation, signed by President Prabowo Subianto on 2 July 2026, is claimed not to be intended to burden the public. “Every rupiah of PNBP received by the state will be returned to the public in the form of faster, more accurate, secure, and higher quality services,” he stressed. In addition to regulating citizenship services, PP Number 30 of 2026 also brings good news for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The government decided to maintain the trademark registration fee for MSMEs at Rp500,000 per class without any increase. Conversely, the trademark registration fee for general applicants has been adjusted to Rp2,800,000 per class. This is the first tariff adjustment made by the government since 2016. Supratman added that the government is also simplifying the administrative requirements for trademark registration for MSMEs. This is intended to ensure that more local business actors receive legal and professional intellectual property protection. “The principle we uphold is professional and equitable public service, while ensuring public access to legal services,” he concluded.
