Citizen Killed in Riots Following DPR Protest; Coordinating Minister Yusril Urges Public Not to be Provoked
The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has requested that the public exercise restraint and avoid believing unverified information regarding the riots that occurred in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta, following recent demonstrations.
Yusril emphasised that the police are still working to uncover the series of events that took place after the demonstrations on 27 August 2026, including the death of a citizen named Bambang and the assault of a Year 12 student named Faturrohman.
“Polda Metro Jaya is currently conducting an investigation into the death of Bambang and the assault of Faturrohman. No conclusions have yet been reached regarding the perpetrators or the parties responsible for these two incidents,” Yusril stated in a briefing in Jakarta on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
According to Yusril, the police are still examining the entire sequence of events to uncover the full facts. The investigation is directed not only at identifying those who committed the violence but also at identifying those alleged to have ordered or incited it.
“A deep investigation is underway to reach a conclusion on who ordered, who incited, and who committed the assault. For those proven responsible based on evidence, firm law enforcement measures will certainly be taken,” he said.
Yusril also emphasised that, to date, law enforcement agencies have not concluded any involvement of specific individuals, community groups, or mass organisations in the two cases.
This statement comes amidst various allegations on social media linking the riots and alleged violence to certain groups or organisations.
“Law enforcement agencies are not accusing anyone of involvement in the assault, whether individuals, groups, or specific mass organisations. Therefore, I ask the public not to be easily provoked by unverified information,” said Yusril.
Yusril explained that the two incidents occurred after protesters had left the DPR Building area. At that time, the situation in Pejompongan was reportedly marked by clashes between groups of residents.
Consequently, he requested that these cases not be used as a pretext for retaliatory actions that could trigger further violence.
Yusril also expressed his appreciation to the demonstrators who, in his view, had expressed their aspirations peacefully, including protesters arriving from Pati and other regions, as well as university students.
