Citizen Killed in Assault During 27 August Unrest: Coordinating Minister Yusril Responds
The Government has requested that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) take firm law enforcement action against anyone responsible for the assault that led to the death of Bambang Setiyandum during post-demonstration chaos in Jakarta on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, also warned the public not to be provoked by allegations accusing certain groups of being the perpetrators behind the fatal assault.
Yusril requested that the public refrain from attitudes leading to retaliation against groups accused of the assault. He urged the community to leave the investigation entirely to the police to identify those responsible for the violence that resulted in the loss of life.
“Polda Metro Jaya is currently investigating the death of Bambang Setiyawan and the assault on Faturrohman,” Yusril stated via a press release on Sunday (30/8/2026).
As of the current investigation, the police have not yet reached a conclusion regarding the identity of the perpetrators or the parties responsible for the assault. “In-depth investigations are being conducted to determine who ordered, who instigated, and who carried out the assault. For those found responsible based on the evidence, firm law enforcement measures will certainly be taken,” said Yusril.
Yusril expressed hope that the investigation by Polda Metro Jaya would quickly identify the perpetrators. “Once evidence and facts are obtained, those proven to have committed criminal acts must be processed according to the law. The same applies to any specific parties identified as perpetrators,” Yusril added. Consequently, he requested that the public avoid jumping to conclusions or accusing specific groups, which could lead to street-level unrest.
“Law enforcement agencies are not accusing anyone involved in the assault, whether individuals, groups, or specific mass organisations. Therefore, I ask the public not to be easily provoked by unverified information,” said Yusril.
“We must not allow this ongoing investigation to trigger further riots or violence. Let us leave the process to the law enforcement authorities and work together to maintain public peace and order,” Yusril continued.
Bambang Setiyawan, a resident of Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, known to be a mirror trader, passed away on Thursday night (27/8/2026) or early Friday morning (28/8/2026). Bambang died after being assaulted by a group of individuals in plain clothes who were forcibly dispersing groups of people who had taken to the streets following demonstrations at the DPR/MPR Building on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
In addition to Bambang, a 12th-grade student named Faturrohman was also assaulted during the chaos and forced dispersal. Several videos have circulated on social media recording the group performing the forced dispersal of people on the streets. However, to date, Polda Metro Jaya has not been able to confirm the identity of the group responsible for the forced dispersal.
