Citing Train Accident and Daycare Case, Puan Calls for Improved Worker Facilities
House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has spotlighted the train accident in East Bekasi and the child abuse case at a childcare facility (daycare) in Yogyakarta as crucial reminders of the importance of improving support facilities for workers.
According to Puan, these two incidents demonstrate that worker protection is not only about employment relations but also concerns transportation safety and support for workers’ family domestic needs.
“In the past week, we have seen various heartbreaking scenes faced by workers. The recent train accident was mostly experienced by workers on their way home,” she stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Friday (1/5/2026).
She also alluded to the child abuse case at the daycare, which has captured public attention.
“Then the daycare abuse case is also a shared concern because childcare facilities have now become an alternative for working parents,” said Puan.
Puan assessed that the state must be present in a tangible manner to ensure workers feel secure, both while working and in their family lives.
On the momentum of International Labour Day or May Day 2026, Puan said all workers deserve proper protection.
“Whether formal workers, informal workers, workers in conventional sectors, domestic sector workers, freelancers, creative workers, teachers, online motorcycle taxi drivers, domestic helpers, smallholder farmers, daily labourers, up to street vendors, all deserve protection from the state,” said Puan.
She also emphasised that the DPR will continue to oversee various policies that favour workers and push for improved welfare of the working community.
“The ratification of the PPRT Law, coinciding with Kartini Day commemorations and close to the May Day moment, we hope will become a real struggle for workers,” said Puan.
She added that Labour Day commemorations must be a momentum to ensure the quality of workers’ lives continues to improve, including through the provision of safe and family-friendly public facilities.
