Cirebon (ANTARA) - The Cirebon Regency Government, West Java, is improving the governance of 344 active cooperatives through a cooperative clinic programme so that these institutions can develop into healthier entities and run their businesses sustainably.

Head of the Cirebon Regency Cooperatives and SMEs Office, Alex Suheriyawan, said in Cirebon on Monday that the improvement is one of the strategic programmes prioritised by the regional government in 2027.

“We are directing this improvement so that cooperatives are not only institutionally active, but also have good governance and develop into healthy cooperatives,” he said.

He explained that the clinic is used to diagnose the condition of each cooperative in stages, from potential to governance and institutional health levels.

According to him, the diagnosis results serve as the basis for determining the need for competency strengthening, managerial training and mentoring for each cooperative.

“We will look at the condition of each cooperative one by one, then determine which parts need to be improved so that the guidance matches the needs of that cooperative,” he said.

He said this approach is necessary because the condition of cooperatives in Cirebon Regency is not entirely the same, so guidance cannot be carried out with a uniform pattern.

Alex noted that there are currently 344 active cooperatives that have gone through a curation process, in addition to 424 Red and White Village and Sub-district Cooperatives (KDMP) that are also developing in Cirebon Regency.

He said that from the mapping results, it will be possible to identify cooperatives that are still active, cooperatives that are moving towards a healthy condition, and cooperatives that are no longer feasible to develop.

“So now we no longer look at cooperatives only in terms of numbers, but place more emphasis on the quality and ability of cooperatives to run their business activities,” he said.

Alex said the cooperative clinic programme is a follow-up to the Regional Regulation on Cooperatives and SMEs, which has been passed by the Cirebon Regency Government together with the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD).

According to him, this regulation serves as the basis for the regional government to develop cooperative strengthening programmes in a more targeted and measurable manner.

He hopes that improving governance through the cooperative clinic can enhance institutional health while encouraging cooperatives to carry out real business activities.

“Ultimately, we want cooperative governance to improve, so that cooperatives can develop and help build the economic ecosystem in Cirebon Regency,” he said.
