Cirebon Power assures it will continue to supply electricity to PLN, including during Idul Fitri. Even if coal supplies are reduced, electricity supply for the public remains secure.

As is known, at the start of 2026 there was a coal shortage triggered by government policy that cut the production target from 790 million tonnes in 2025 to around 600 million tonnes this year. This move was made to curb global prices and prioritise domestic needs.

‘This condition affects coal availability and could lead to reduced electricity supply. However, we do not expect that to happen,’ said Joseph Pangalila, Deputy President Director of Cirebon Power, on Thursday (5 February) afternoon.

Cirebon Power, he added, has felt the shrinking coal stock since last year. ‘Low coal DMO prices are also one of the factors causing the current situation,’ he stated.

Therefore, the company is asking for government discernment to increase coal supply to power plants. ‘We are awaiting government steps, which are currently talking with suppliers to supply coal to the power plants,’ Joseph continued.

Currently, Cirebon Power’s coal stock is partly for the next ten days and partly for less than ten days.

Designed for coal

At the same opportunity, Joseph also confirmed that no other fuel could substitute for the operation of the Cirebon Thermal Power Plant (PLTU Cirebon). ‘PLTU Cirebon has been designed to use coal as the main fuel,’ Joseph said.

Even the type of coal has been determined, and replacing with a different type would not be possible. Each coal has its own specifications. Each plant uses coal with different specifications.

When asked about electricity supply to PLN during Lebaran 2026 amid coal supply constraints, Joseph was confident it would remain safe. ‘The public need not worry. Eid al-Fitr is safe; usually around Lebaran many factories close, so electricity supply also decreases significantly,’ he said.

Cirebon Power currently operates two generating units, namely PLTU Cirebon 1 and PLTU Cirebon 2. Both units have so far continued to operate well throughout 2025 and contributed to national electricity supply. ‘Throughout 2025, both of Cirebon Power’s plants operated well, improving plant reliability and increasing their contribution to national electricity supply,’ he explained.

At the end of February 2026, PLTU Cirebon 2 completed its Major Overhaul (MOH) type C maintenance, meeting the target. The maintenance process went smoothly without incidents, enabling the company to record 4.9 million safe work hours.
