Cirebon Buntet Pesantren Elder KH Adib Passes Away

Cirebon – To Allah we belong and to Him we return; sad news has arrived from Cirebon, West Java. The prominent Islamic figure and elder of Buntet Pesantren in Cirebon, KH Adib Rofiuddin Izza, passed away on Monday, 1 June 2026. The news of the charismatic cleric’s death from one of Indonesia’s oldest pesantrens was first reported by Akhmad Rofahan, son of one of the Buntet Pesantren’s senior figures, via WhatsApp. ‘To Allah we belong and to Him we return. The elder of Buntet Pesantren, KH Adib Rofiuddin Izza, has passed away. Please offer prayers for him,’ Rofahan said. He explained that KH Adib passed away while receiving treatment at Jakarta’s Harapan Kita Hospital. KH Adib’s death has plunged the Buntet Pesantren community, including students and alumni, into mourning. He was a central figure within the pesantren. Under KH Adib’s leadership, the institution located in Mertapada Kulon Village, Astanajapura Subdistrict, Cirebon Regency, has flourished. Established in the 18th century, it remains one of West Java’s largest Islamic education centres. In the community, KH Adib was known as a humble and tranquil Islamic scholar. His influence extended nationally. Several prominent national figures have visited Buntet Pesantren and met KH Adib personally, including ministers, the national police chief, the House of Representatives chairman, religious organisation leaders, political party heads, and even President Jokowi.
