Circulation of Counterfeit Money Declines, BI: Rupiah Becoming Harder to Forge!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia (BI) has recorded a decline in the circulation of counterfeit money in Indonesia. The trend shows counterfeit notes decreasing from 5 pieces per million (ppm) to approaching 1 ppm.
Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Ricky P. Gozali stated that a ratio of 1 ppm means one counterfeit note is found for every 1 million rupiah notes. The decline in the circulation ratio of counterfeit rupiah is due to advancements in the technology used to produce the rupiah, making Indonesia’s currency difficult to counterfeit.
“That is extraordinary. This is inseparable from the close synergy and strengthening from the technology side, making it easy to recognise and hard to counterfeit,” said Ricky during the Press Conference on the Destruction of Counterfeit Rupiah Notes from Bank Indonesia’s Verification, Wednesday (13/5/2026).
Ricky explained that the quality of the rupiah has been recognised worldwide, as evidenced by the award for the Rp50,000 rupiah note from the 2022 emission as the best note series at the IACA Currency Award 2023. Furthermore, the rupiah is also the safest and most difficult to counterfeit currency in the world in terms of security features.
“The Rp50,000 note emission 2022 in November 2024 achieved second place worldwide for the safest and hardest to counterfeit denomination, consisting of 17 advanced security features,” said Ricky.
In line with this development, based on our research, the quality of counterfeit money currently is very low, so it can be easily identified by the public through 3D methods. On the other hand, the role of the public is also becoming increasingly vital in eradicating counterfeit money, so BI continues to campaign for the movement of love, understanding, and pride in the rupiah.
Ricky also urged the public to always take good care of rupiah notes by applying the ‘5 don’ts’, namely do not fold, do not scribble on, do not staple, do not crumple, and do not wet them.
On this occasion, Ricky also appreciated all parties, including the Counterfeit Money Eradication Coordinating Agency (BOTUSUPAL) of BIN, the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General’s Office, the Indonesian National Police, the Supreme Court, and the District Court for their synergy in combating counterfeit money, including the destruction of counterfeit money today, Wednesday (14/5/2026).
“As a direct mandate from BI in Law No. 7 of 2011 on Currency and to safeguard the security of public transactions using rupiah notes, BI fully supports efforts to eradicate counterfeit money,” said Ricky.
