Circulating Photo of Alleged Attacker of Kontras Activist: Parliament Warns It Is AI Fabrication
The chairperson of Commission III of the Indonesian Parliament, Habiburokhman, has issued a strong warning concerning a photograph purporting to show the suspected perpetrator of the caustic acid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of Kontras (a civil rights watchdog). The photograph that circulated on social media has been confirmed to be not an authentic image but rather an artificial intelligence (AI) fabrication.
Habiburokhman has urged the police to be more responsive in clarifying inaccurate information to prevent public disruption.
“I urge the Police to actively counter and explain to the public each inaccurate development of information. Even I still thought it was a real image until yesterday evening; after I checked, it turned out to be AI,” stated Habiburokhman at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday (16 March).
The Gerindra Party politician expressed concern that AI-generated photographs circulating without official clarification could be dangerous. He warned that visual fabrications closely resembling actual humans could trigger cases of mistaken identity in the field.
“This can confuse the public. What I am concerned about could even lead to misunderstandings; there is someone who looks like the AI photo and then gets beaten by a mob. This is dangerous if we allow it,” he asserted.
Habiburokhman appealed to the public to remain cautious and verify information before disseminating it on social media.
“To the public, we are grateful for your enthusiasm to ensure the perpetrator is quickly caught. The intention is surely good, but we must be careful. Do not let our good intentions create another problem,” he added.
