Circular Waste Management in Banyuwangi Serves 73 Villages
Banyuwangi (ANTARA) - Circular waste management in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, serves tens of thousands of households spread across 73 villages that have joined the environmentally friendly waste management programme.
The Banyuwangi Regency Government has been implementing the Banyuwangi Hijau Programme since 2023, one of the methods being the establishment of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing Sites (TPS3R) in several locations.
“This achievement shows the continuously increasing community participation in supporting source-based waste management and strengthening the integrated waste service system at the village and area levels,” said Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani in Banyuwangi on Wednesday.
Since its implementation in 2023, she continued, the Banyuwangi Hijau Programme has shown progress in strengthening area- and community-based waste management services.
Ipuk mentioned that up to May 2026, the programme has reached 73 villages with service coverage to 23,410 households or around 500,000 residents.
In addition, she said, the Balak TPS 3R facility in Songgon District, which serves as the waste processing station for the Banyuwangi Hijau Programme, has received more than 14,145 tonnes of waste since the start of operations, supported by 91 workers, with 652 tonnes of inorganic waste and 455 tonnes of organic waste processed.
“Thank you for the residents’ support for this programme, and this will reduce the volume of waste at the landfill as well as reduce marine waste,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Banyuwangi Regency Environmental Agency, Dwi Handayani, stated that the achievements in waste management under the Banyuwangi Hijau Programme are inseparable from the role of the villages.
“As many as 73 villages have also collaborated through the signing of cooperation agreements; all these villages have also formed village operator institutions to support waste services,” she said.
According to her, these villages have also allocated special village funds for village waste activities; for the 2023-2026 period, the total reaches Rp3.97 billion.
In addition, she continued, changes in community behaviour have also become a pillar of the success of the Banyuwangi Hijau Programme.
