A fire that engulfed Ciputra Cibubur Mall in Bekasi, West Java, is believed to have originated from the welding of a billboard logo.

“It is suspected to have occurred during the welding of a billboard logo,” said Namar Naris, Head of the Fire Suppression and Rescue Division of the Bekasi City Fire and Rescue Service, speaking to reporters on Tuesday (17 February).

Namar said sparks from the welding process were believed to have ignited the blaze.

“The suspected cause is welding sparks,” he said.

Namar confirmed that the situation at the scene was now under control. He stated that firefighting operations were completed at 14:22 local time.

“The situation is now under control,” he said.

Reports of the fire circulated on social media, including footage uploaded by the Instagram account @kabarcibubur24jam.

In the uploaded video, flames could be seen at the front of the mall building, with thick black smoke visible at the scene.
