JAKARTA – Several traders at Pasar Jaya Cipulir in South Jakarta have chosen to set up stalls on the roadside because the market is closed during the Eid al-Fitr period in 2026. The temporary stalls are opened along Jalan Ciledug Raya in Kebayoran Lama. One daster trader, Ahmad (not his real name), aged 62, said they started trading at the location since Sunday (22/3/2026). “Yes, we started opening here from yesterday because the market is closed, until Wednesday,” said Ahmad when met by Kompas.com at the site on Monday (23/3/2026). According to Ahmad, this practice is often carried out by traders who choose not to go home for Eid. He did not return to his hometown on Sumatra Island because of the considerable costs involved. “Going home for Eid is just to spend money. For one family, it can reach Rp 10 million. So here, it’s to earn money,” he stated. Over the past two days, Ahmad has had to bring all his wares to the location because he cannot store goods in the market kiosks. Nevertheless, he is grateful that his trade today is busier than the first day. “It’s decent today, more crowded; yesterday it was still a bit quiet,” he revealed. A similar situation was shared by another trader, Erna (50), who also chose not to go home this year due to financial constraints. “Sometimes I go home, sometimes not; now I can’t because there’s no money,” Erna said when met separately.
