Cipinang Prison Holds Various Competitions for Inmates to Celebrate 81st Independence Day

The Cipinang Class I Penitentiary in East Jakarta held various competitions, as well as sports and arts activities, for inmates and correctional officers to enliven the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

“This Friday morning, 14 August 2026, in the context of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Cipinang Class I Penitentiary is holding traditional competitions as part of a sports and arts week for inmates and officers,” said Head of Cipinang Class I Penitentiary, Syarpani, in Jakarta on Friday.

The activity is part of a Sports and Arts Week organised by the Cipinang Class I Penitentiary to celebrate the independence momentum whilst serving as a means of rehabilitation for the inmates.

The sports activities not only aim to enliven the Independence Day celebrations but also to provide encouragement and motivation to the inmates.

“This is to enliven, provide spirit and motivation to the inmates so that they are healthy, perform sportingly, and participate in filling the independence of the Republic of Indonesia,” Syarpani stated.

Various sports were contested during the event, including futsal, volleyball, and table tennis. In addition to involving inmates, the activities also provided a space for correctional officers to compete and strengthen camaraderie. For matches involving officers, the Cipinang Penitentiary also invited ranks from other penitentiaries and detention centres across Jakarta.

“The hope is to produce athletes from within the Cipinang Class I Penitentiary,” Syarpani said.

Beyond being a competitive arena, prizes were also prepared for the winners of each competition. The Cipinang Class I Penitentiary collaborated with the Indonesian Correctional Primary Cooperative (Primkopasindo), specifically within the Cipinang Penitentiary environment, to provide prizes for participants who achieved success in each competition.

These sports and competition activities are not only held to commemorate the Republic of Indonesia’s Independence Day. Physical rehabilitation for inmates has become a routine activity at the Cipinang Class I Penitentiary.

“Events like this are held every two months, or even every month. Today’s event is specifically for the 2026 Independence Day. For daily activities, we also carry them out, because these 2,100 people exercise every day,” Syarpani said.
